Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin believes forging a strong working relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson could prove to be vital for Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

Manchester United sacked Louis van Gaal and his coaching staff last night, and Jorge Mendes is expected to meet the club hierarchy to thrash out the final details of a contract that would see Mourinho take charge of the club soon.

While the Red Devils are unlikely to announce his appointment today, it is expected to be confirmed at some point this week and Mourinho will be tasked with job of taking Manchester United back to the top of English football.

Mourinho left Chelsea in December amidst rumours of a falling out with some of the players of the squad, and many are worried about his antics ahead of his move to Old Trafford.

However, Nevin feels Mourinho would be willing to listen to former Red Devils boss Ferguson as he revealed that the Portuguese has immense respect for the legendary Scotsman.

The former Blue said on BBC Radio 5 live: “If he was ever going to listen to anyone, there is a guy upstairs he would listen to, and that’s Sir Alex.

“See if you can get them working in tandem and Jose going to him for advice and if they have a good relationship, world beware, absolutely world beware.

“I don’t know that’s going to know, but I do know Jose Mourinho respects Sir Alex massively, so that might happen.”

Mourinho is expected to receive massive funds in the summer to reshape the Manchester United squad to his liking and his first game in charge will be a friendly against Borussia Dortmund in China in July.
