Former Rangers defender Alan McLaren believes Michael O’Halloran could be Mark Warburton’s plan B next season in the Premiership.

The Glasgow giants signed the forward from St. Johnstone on four-and-half-year contract during the winter transfer window, and he eased himself into life at the club in the second half of the season.

O’Halloran could not participate in the Scottish Cup as he was cup-tied, and Rangers missed his presence on the pitch as they suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Hibernian in the final on Saturday.

However, McLaren feels the former Bolton man could be an important player for Warburton in the Premiership next season as his ability to run the channels will provide the Rangers boss with a workable plan B in the top tier.

The former defender said on Rangers TV's season review: “O'Halloran destroyed us here. If you play the ball over the top, if you play the ball into the channels, he'll catch it.

“If there's one thing that defenders can't stand it's somebody who wants to run in behind you.

“That could be the route one that we could use.”

The former Scotland Under-21 international has made 13 appearances for Rangers this season, with three goals and an assist to his name.

And O’Halloran will be looking to impress in his first full season for Rangers in the Premiership.
