New Rangers midfielder Joey Barton has indicated that he wants to take the Glasgow giants to a new level and is relishing the challenge of wearing the famous jersey.

The 33-year-old snubbed a new contract offer from Burnley and joined the Glasgow giants earlier today on a two-year deal, which is set to take effect from 1st July.

The midfielder was vital to Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League and was also named in the Championship’s Team of the Year, but the veteran Englishman wanted a new challenge.

And Rangers offered him that, with the midfielder keen to wear the famous shirt and make his own little contribution to Rangers’ history, by taking them to the next level next season.

In his first interview as a Gers player, Barton told Rangers TV: “The gauntlet for whoever is in the jersey is to lay a marker down.

“To not only match what’s gone before, because there have been some incredibly gifted players who did great things here, but also to take the jersey on and lift it to a new level.

“This is far more than a football club, and there are not a great deal of places like this left in Britain.

“The competitive animal in me thinks what a great challenge this is and what a great environment.”

After playing in the Premier League and the Championship, Barton will be hoping to make his mark in Scottish football when he takes the field in the Premiership next season for Rangers.
