Arsenal’s latest signing Granit Xhaka has claimed that the Premier League suits him better than the Bundesliga.

The 23-year-old, who was confirmed as the Gunners’ first summer signing today, joined for a fee in the region of €45m on a long term deal from Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach.

Xhaka, who is a combative central midfielder by trade, was a vital part of the Gladbach side that finished as high as third in the Bundesliga last season and concluded this season in fourth spot.

He told the official Arsenal website: “I like to play football. I’m an aggressive player and also a leader. I’m only 23 but I captained a good team in Germany.

“Yes, it’s [the Premier League] a fight. I like that but Arsenal can also play football and that’s very good.

“I don’t think it’s the same. In Germany you can play aggressively but the referee will always blow his whistle, but in England that’s not the case. That’s better for me.”

The Switzerland international has represented the national side 40 times and made over 100 appearances for Gladbach, after moving from Basel where he won the Swiss title twice and progressed through the youth system.

The midfielder, who has been one of Bundesliga’s most impressive midfielders over the past three seasons, will want to take his form from the German top flight into the Premier League.
