Rafael Benitez is close to agreeing a new deal to remain Newcastle United’s manager, according to the Press Association.

The Spaniard, who was appointed by Newcastle on an initial three-year deal in March, could not help the club avoid relegation from the Premier League.

It was claimed that Benitez had a clause in his contract which could allow him part ways with the Magpies in case they dropped down to the Championship.

However, now it seems that Benitez is keen to remain on Tyneside and manage Newcastle in the second tier of English football.

Although the 56-year-old, who was sacked by Real Madrid in January, could not prevent Newcastle from beating the drop, the St James’ Park outfit ended their campaign on a high by thrashing Tottenham Hotspur 5-1.
