Rangers winger Barrie McKay is looking forward to playing alongside Joey Barton next season and believes his capture is sign of forward progress for the club.

Barton snubbed a new contract offer from Burnley and a chance to play in the Premier League next season and moved to newly promoted Scottish Premiership outfit Rangers on a two-year deal.

The veteran midfielder talked up the challenge of playing for a club such as Gers and McKay also feels a player of Barton’s calibre will surely improve the squad, as they look to challenge Celtic’s hegemony at the top of Scottish football.

The winger also feels that a signing such as Barton, who could have been playing in the Premier League next season, shows that Rangers are moving forward as a club.

On the capture of Barton, McKay told the club’s official website: “He’s a great player and his experience in the middle of the park will help a lot too. I can’t wait to meet him.

“We are going up and are expecting to challenge – you don’t play for a club like Rangers if you accept getting beaten.

“We go into every game knowing we need to win, and getting that type of player – someone who could have played in the Premier League – speaks volumes for where the club is going.”

Mark Warburton is expected to add more quality to the Rangers squad this summer and Barton is not going to be the only new face at Ibrox next season.
