Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson believes that Joey Barton's signing is a massive one for the club and he is looking forward to having him around the squad.

The newly promoted Premiership side snapped up the former England international on a free transfer earlier in the week following his departure from Burnley.

According to the managing director, Barton's signature is a statement of intent on the part of his club and the Gers are looking to build on it.

Praising Barton for what he has achieved this season, Robertson said that the veteran midfielder has been a good footballer over the course of his playing years and has shown a fascinating character as well.

“Joey Barton is a massive signing for the club. He brings experience and a combative nature on the park", Robertson told his club's official website.

"He is a very, very good football player as we saw last year and in previous years, and he is a fascinating character as well.

“His press conference and interviews were terrific on Tuesday, and he is a very, very engaging personality, so I am looking forward to having him around the club.

"He will be a massive addition for the team.”

The Gers have made four signings so far with a few more still to come. Robertson insists that his team will look to match up the "six or seven" that has been mooted since January.

“We have already signed four and there are others in the pipeline.

"Hopefully we will have the majority done before June 18, and that’s really important as it allows the boys to bed in and you then have them bonding as a group and creating the team spirit as quickly as possible, and that’s something we’re going to need next season.

“Six or seven has been the number mentioned consistently since January, and we are probably still looking at that kind of number."
