Zenit Saint Petersburg defender Ezequiel Garay is on new Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho’s shortlist, according to Sky Italia.

The Portuguese tactician, who was appointed by Manchester United as their new manager earlier in the day, succeeding Louis van Gaal, is keen to strengthen the Red Devils’ defence over the summer.

As a result, Mourinho has identified the Argentina international as a possible summer transfer target.

The 30-year-old enjoyed a decent 2015/16 campaign as he scored twice and provided an assist, in addition to providing stability to his side’s defence.

And Mourinho feels Garay, who is contracted with Zenit until 2019, could improve Manchester United’s defence heading into next season.

Besides Garay, Roma defender Kostas Manolas, Everton’s John Stones and Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane are also on Mourinho’s shortlist of targets as he looks to make sure the Red Devils defence is solid.

Despite managing to win the FA Cup, Manchester United finished last season in fifth spot, thereby losing the chance to play in the Champions League.

However, the attraction of playing under Mourinho may offset that with potential signings.
