Leeds United managerial target Darrell Clarke has agreed a new deal with Bristol Rovers, the League One club have confirmed.

The 38-year-old, who helped Bristol Rovers to gain promotion to League One after helping the club to a third-place finish in League Two in the 2015/16 campaign, was heavily linked with the Leeds job.

The Whites are yet to offer Steve Evans a new deal which will keep the Scot at Elland Road beyond the season and they formally approached Bristol Rovers for Clarke.

Evans, who took charge of Leeds in October, guided the club to a 13th-place finish, 15 points adrift of the play-offs.

However, Leeds owner Massimo Cellino is still on the lookout for a new manager as the Yorkshire giants were talking compensation terms with Rovers for Clarke.

But with Clarke now signing a fresh deal with Bristol Rovers, Leeds will have to look elsewhere for a new manager.

Walter Zenga, Fabio Cannavaro and Ivan Juric have all been linked with succeeding Evans at Leeds.

Cellino was turned down by MK Dons boss Karl Robinson earlier this summer.
