Peter Lorimer is of the opinion that irrespective of whoever Leeds United appoint as their next manager, the Whites need to rope in four or five quality players in the summer to make the club playoff contenders next season.

Steve Evans, who was appointed by Leeds United in October, helped the club to a 13th-place finish, 15 points adrift of the playoffs.

Leeds are yet to offer a fresh contract to Evans which would keep him at Elland Road next summer, with the Yorkshire giants trying to bring in Bristol Rovers boss Darrell Clarke.

Amidst all the speculation surrounding Leeds and their new manager, the club are yet to dip in the transfer market.

And Lorimer thinks the only way the Whites can challenge for the playoffs next season is if they sign at least four quality players as it will be extremely difficult for any manager to turn the present crop into promotion contenders.

“Let’s not lose sight of a bigger issue here”, he wrote in his column in the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“Of course we need a decision about the head coach – and I’ll say once again that in my view Steve Evans has done a good job in his time in charge – we need players too.

“Managers build their reputations with promotions and trophies, but they don’t win either of them without good players.

“I doubt whether any manager out there could turn the squad at Leeds as it stands into playoff contenders.

“In my view there’s the basis of a promotion bid within it, but that will only be realised if four or five quality players are added before the season starts.”
