Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot has claimed that Rafael Benitez’s decision to stay at the club is a win-win situation for everyone.

The 56-year-old Spaniard recently put pen to paper on a new three-year deal with the Magpies, after the Tyneside based club were relegated from the Premier League due to finishing 18th in the league this season.

Benitez, who arrived at St. James’ Park after Steve McClaren’s sacking back in March, won four games during his initial stay at Newcastle United, which included a 5-1 win over title-chasing Tottenham during the last day of the campaign and a 3-0 win over Swansea back in April.

30-year-old Elliot made as many as 22 appearances for the Magpies this season due to the absence of first choice goalkeeper Tim Krul, who sustained a season-ending cruciate injury back in October.

Elliot has claimed that Benitez staying at the club acts as a win-win situation for everyone.

He told the official Newcastle United website: "The most important thing now is getting the club back on track with Rafa at the helm.

"When you get relegated – and have gone close the year before – you have to hold your hands up and say that things aren't right. And by that I am taking about the players and the club.

"Hopefully we make as many changes as we can to get us back to where we want to be and where we deserve to be.

"We need to move this club forward and hopefully we can look back and see that this was one step back to go two forward.

“That may be necessary and hopefully it is only good for the club.

"Rafa wants to change the club in the way that he sees is right. He's done that at many different places and has experience of managing in England, too.

"It is a win-win for everyone and hopefully we can look forward to a lot of success."
