Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has revealed that he admires Jose Mourinho as the Portuguese manager is not afraid to be himself despite not being palatable to everyone.

After a couple of days of negotiations, Manchester United confirmed on Friday that Jose Mourinho will be their new manager, who will be replacing the sacked Louis van Gaal.

Mourinho had been linked with the job since the end of last year when Manchester United’s form took a nosedive, and despite his success in Europe, there were reservations at Old Trafford about appointing the Portuguese because of his abrasive style of management.

However, Manchester United legend Schmeichel is fond of managers such as Mourinho and admires the Portuguese for the fact that he hasn’t changed, despite being aware that his style is not welcomed by everyone.

The Dane told DN Sport: “I like him as a coach, and I have never hid my preference; rather it’s his style, which is difference from someone such as [Pep] Guardiola, who is also a great coach.

“When I was a player, I always liked coaches such as Mourinho; not everyone has the same attitude and Jose Mourinho is not afraid of being Jose Mourinho, despite knowing that his style won’t appeal to everyone.”

Mourinho is known for his larger than life persona, and for hogging the headlines, but there have also been rumours that he has been coveting the Manchester United job for years.

And Schmeichel is quietly confident that the Portuguese doesn’t believe that he is bigger than Manchester United.

“Most importantly he always felt that he was above the club; I do not know but from what I was hearing, I believe Mourinho doesn’t believe that he is bigger than Manchester United.”
