Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Wembley Stadium to play their Champions League home fixtures at the ground for the 2016/17 campaign.

Spurs, who qualified for the group stage of next season’s Champions League after finishing the 2015/16 Premier League campaign in third spot, are building a new stadium adjacent to their current ground, White Hart Lane.

Tottenham will not be able to host their Champions League home matches at White Hart Lane next season as stadium access, capacity and rights delivery will not meet UEFA’s requirements.

The north London outfit, whose intention is to open the new stadium in the 2018/19 campaign, also have an option to hire the national stadium for the entire 2017/18 season.

“We’ve reached agreement with Wembley Stadium to play our Champions League fixtures there for the 2016/17 season”, Tottenham tweeted.

“This is to meet UEFA requirements, which will be impacted by the current stadium works affecting access, capacity and rights delivery.

“As we shall be required to vacate WHL to complete the latter stages of our new stadium and surrounding environs.

“The agreement additionally provides an option to play all Premier League & cup home games at Wembley Stadium for the 2017/18 season.

“It’s our intention to open the new stadium for the 2018/19 season.

“This timetable is also dependent on infrastructure, transport & associated commitments being delivered by TfL & Haringey Council.”

Tottenham’s new stadium is expected to be a 61,000-seater, while their present ground can accommodate around 36,000 people.

Spurs last played in the Champions League in the 2010/11 campaign and managed to reach the quarter-finals of the continental competition.
