Former Rangers star Hugh Burns thinks that Tom Walsh has "a big chance" to break through into the first team at Ibrox under Mark Warburton next season.

Warburton has not been shy about handing youngsters opportunities to impress at Rangers, but has stressed they must be good enough to warrant their places on merit.

The Englishman has also been an advocat of loans for youngsters to help their game develop and Walsh was sent out to Dumbarton in January this year.

Burns thinks the 19-year-old midfielder did well at the Sons and could well put himself in contention for a spot in the first team at Ibrox next term.

"For me Tom Walsh has got a big chance. He's been a wee bit unfortunate and went through a bad spell with injury", he said on Rangers TV, assessing the season.

"He's been doing well down at Dumbarton.

"I don't always think it's easy for the young Rangers kids to go out and stand out that much because sometimes they are earmarked and someone will have a pop at them, out on loan from a big club and what have you, so they are going to get a bit of a hard time", Burns continued.

"But I like Tom Walsh. He's got two feet, he can go to tbe byline and turn it back – and he can whip it in with his left as well, so I think he's got something about him."

Warburton has already strengthened in midfield in anticipation of next season, bringing in Jordan Rossiter from Liverpool and Joey Barton from Burnley.

And 19-year-old Walsh may have his work cut out when it comes to earning regular first team football at Rangers.
