Chelsea and Manchester United are likely to be frustrated in their efforts to sign Roma defender Kostas Manolas due to a sell-on clause in the Greek's contract which is valid this summer.

New Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is keen to reinforce his defensive options at Old Trafford and has been linked with making a move to snap up Manolas.

But the Portuguese may have to look elsewhere as it appears unlikely Roma will agree to sell Manolas in the summer transfer window. Incoming Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is also a big fan of the defender, however he too is set to have to target alternative players.

Indeed, according to Italian TV programme Qui Studio A Voi Stadio, Manolas' former club Olympiacos have a sell-on clause which is active until the end of the summer window.

The clause means that if Roma sell Manolas, they must give 50 per cent of the fee to Olympiacos, something which makes it unlikely the Giallorossi will sell this summer.

Roma signed Manolas from Olympiacos in 2014 and splashed out €15m to take him to Italy.

He quickly established himself at the Serie A club and is a fixture in the club's defence.

The defender made a total of 45 appearances for Roma in the 2015/16 campaign.
