Former QPR boss Neil Warnock believes Burnley would not have earned promotion from the Championship last season if they had not had Rangers new boy Joey Barton.

Barton made 40 appearances across all competitions for Burnley in the 2015/16 campaign and helped Sean Dyche's men to top the Championship table, winning promotion to the Premier League in the process.

However, the 33-year-old turned down Burnley's offer of a new one-year contract and opted to join Rangers instead, signing a two-year deal with Mark Warburton's men.

Warnock feels Barton is in good nick and explained he does not think Burnley would have gone up without the midfielder.

"He wasn't the easiest of players to manage, but if you look at the star quality in players, the top players have that little edge about them. There are not many like Dennis Bergkamp who just have their ability", he told BBC Scotland's Sportsound.

"That edge is what makes them a winner. I don't think Burnley would have gone up last season without Joey Barton, and Sean Dyche would probably say the same."

Barton has been dogged by controversy throughout his career, often being slapped with lengthy bans.

And while Warnock feels the midfielder will enjoy his time in Scotland, he feels Barton does need to not let the "red mist" envelop him on the pitch.

"If Joey can curb that red mist, I think he will enjoy it in Scotland more than he has enjoyed his football for many years", the former Rotherham United manager added.
