Napoli are keeping tabs on Newcastle United midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum as an alternative to Piotr Zielinski, according to Italian broadcaster Sky Italia.

Wijnaldum, who joined Newcastle from PSV Eindhoven last summer, was in great form in the 2015/16 campaign.

However, the Dutch international’s 11 goals and five assists in 38 Premier League games could not prevent the Magpies from avoiding the drop to the Championship.

As a result, Wijnaldum has been linked with leaving Newcastle in the summer, with Roma interested in snapping him up.

And it now seems the 25-year-old is also in the radar of fellow Serie A outfit Napoli, who are also keen on Piotr Zielinski.

The Udinese midfielder has also attracted the interest of Liverpool, and as a result, Napoli have identified Wijnaldum as a possible alternative if they fail in their bid to land Zielinski.

Wijnaldum, who is contracted with Newcastle until 2020, has 30 caps and six goals for the Netherlands to his name.
