Former Liverpool midfielder David Thompson does not believe Mario Gotze should be a priority signing for the Reds this summer.

Liverpool have been strongly linked with wanting to sign the Bayern Munich midfielder, who has been warned over the amount of playing time he will receive if he remains at the Allianz Arena into next season.

But having watched Gotze in action for Germany at Euro 2016, Thompson is convinced Liverpool should not bust a gut trying to sign him.

And the former Liverpool man feels the Reds need to focus on adding leaders to their squad, as they are lacking in leaders at present.

Thompson took to Twitter to write: "Wasn't Gotze's best game in all fairness to him!

"I also don't think he should be a priority for LFC.

"Need some proper leaders."

Thompson came through the youth ranks at Liverpool and remained at the club until a move to Coventry City in 2000.

The 38-year-old also represented Blackburn Rovers, Wigan Athletic, Portsmouth and Bolton Wanderers.
