Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl has revealed the club are willing to spend a record sum to sign defender Andreas Christensen on a permanent basis from Chelsea.

The 20-year-old is currently halfway through a two-year loan at Gladbach from Chelsea, but has already impressed to such an extent that the Bundesliga side are desperate to keep him permanently.

Gladbach know to tempt Chelsea to sell they must flash the cash and, flush from selling Granit Xhaka to Arsenal, are ready to pay a club record fee.

Eberl told Sport Bild: "We will only spend the money we have.

"But in the case of Christensen, of course, we are ready to pay a record transfer", he continued.

"We know that a player of his quality is not exactly cheap."

Gladbach's current club record transfer fee paid to sign a player is €15m lavished on taking Christoph Kramer from Bayer Leverkusen.

Chelsea defender Christensen has a contract at Stamford Bridge which runs until the summer of 2020 and it remains to be seen at what price point the Blues might play ball over a permanent move for the Dane.

It had been claimed €20m would do the trick, but Eberl said: "There is no fixed amount."
