Bundesliga outfit Schalke have beaten off competition from Manchester United in their chase for FC Basel forward Breel Embolo.

The young forward is currently with the Swiss national team in the European Championship, but it seems a decision on his future has been taken in the background.

Newly promoted Bundesliga side RB Leipzig believed until recently that they were close to signing Embolo from the Swiss outfit this summer, but Manchester United’s entry into the chase changed the dynamics of the transfer saga.

Leipzig bowed out of the race, and Mourinho entrusted Jorge Mendes to act as a mediator in the deal after touching base with the player’s representatives in the last few weeks.

However, Schalke have blindsided Manchester United in the race for Embolo and according to Sky Italia, they have reached an agreement to sign the young Swiss international this summer.

It has been claimed Manchester United were taken aback by the swift nature of Schalke’s negotiations with Basel and Embolo is now expected to move to Gelsenkirchen after he returns from France.

Despite his tender years, the 19-year-old has scored 31 goals in 90 appearances for Basel since breaking into the club’s first team set-up a few years ago.

Embolo has also earned 12 international caps for Switzerland.
