Arsenal are looking at Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi as an alternative after missing out on Leicester City hitman Jamie Vardy, according to Interlive.it.

Vardy, who was one of the main reasons behind the Foxes winning their first Premier League title last season, announced that he will be putting pen to paper to a new four-year deal once he returns to the club.

The Gunners had been hoping to sign the 29-year-old in the coming days after having activated his release clause earlier in the month, reportedly offering a £20m for the player, and offering him a wage worth £120,000 a week.

Arsene Wenger though now has turned his attention to the Nerazzurri skipper and is ready to table a bid for the Argentina international.

Roberto Mancini's team though are not keen on letting their skipper leave and are not expected to entertain any bids below €40m for the player.

The former Sampdoria man was one of the predominant presences in the Inter team last term, managing a total of 33 appearances and scoring 16 goals.

Icardi in fact is not the only man to have been linked with a move to the Emirates with former Manchester City man Stevan Jovetic also being linked with a move back to England.

Wenger has identified the top of the pitch as one of the areas where he needs to improve in order to provide competition for Olivier Giroud.
