Jamie Vardy has rejected Arsenal's overtures and has agreed to sign a new four-year contract with Leicester City.

Arsenal invoked his £20m release clause earlier this month, and were hopeful of signing the player from Leicester City this summer, but the striker deferred the decision to until after the European Championship.

However, there was speculation that Vardy could agree to continue at Leicester and Arsene Wenger said recently that his understanding was the England international would not be joining Arsenal this summer.

And Wenger’s words have been confirmed by Leicester City when they announced earlier today that Vardy has agreed to sign a new four-year deal with the Premier League champions.

A statement on the club’s official website read: “Leicester City have today (Thursday) agreed with the representatives of Jamie Vardy to extend the England international’s contract with the Premier League champions for a further four years.

“Both parties hope that this announcement will end recent speculation regarding Jamie’s future and confirm his long term commitment to Leicester City Football Club.

“Jamie will continue to focus all of his efforts on trying to achieve success with the England team at the European Championships in France.

“There will be no further comment from either the Club or the player on this matter until the conclusion of the tournament.”

Vardy was instrumental in Leicester’s unexpected league title win last season, scoring 24 goals in the English top tier and providing eight assists along the way.

He also made an impact for England in the European Championship and scored the crucial equaliser against Wales in their 2-1 win in the group stage.
