Former England defender Matthew Upson has backed his compatriot Jamie Vardy's decision to snub Arsenal in favour of staying put at Leicester City.

Vardy, who was one of the primary contributors behind Leicester winning their first Premier League title last season, was subject to a £20m bid from Arsenal earlier this month.

In the process the Gunners activated the striker's release clause, offering him a deal reported to be worth £120,000 a week.

The 29-year-old, who joined the Foxes from non-league side Fleetwood Town for £1m in 2012, didn't respond to the offer immediately and left for his international duty in France.

The decision finally came earlier today with the striker deciding to agree to a new four-year contract with Leicester. Backing Vardy's decision, the former Leicester City man said that it was a right thing to do as he has been doing exceptionally well at Leicester and is comfortable there.

"Some will say it's a strange decision, but having been at Leicester City only last season I know he's really comfortable there", Upson was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"He has played some fabulous football in a team that has catered to his strengths which has probably propelled him to the position he is in right now.

"So I can really understand the decision he has made."

Vardy managed a total of 24 league goals for the Foxes last season and also provided his team-mates with eight assists.
