Napoli are stepping up on their interest in Roma and Stoke City target Axel Witsel and are set to meet the player’s father later today to discuss a move, it has been claimed.

With his contract expiring at the end of next season, Witsel is expected to leave Zenit Saint Petersburg this summer, and has been linked with a move to a number of clubs.

Stoke City have already reportedly slapped in a bid for the player, but it has been suggested that Witsel is keener on a transfer to Italy, especially Roma, where he could work under his former manager Luciano Spalletti.

Inter Milan and Juventus have also been linked with a move for the 27-year-old midfielder, but Napoli are the ones who are making up some serious ground to attract the midfielder to the San Paolo.

According to Sky Italia, the Serie A giants are set to meet his father, who also acts as his agent, later today, and hold talks over a proposed transfer for the Belgian international.

The meeting is expected to be based on the outlines of a proposed transfer and whether the player is interested in a move to the San Paolo this summer.

Napoli are hoping for a positive outcome from the talks with Witsel’s father, before they make a bid for the player in the upcoming days and weeks.

Witsel is currently concentrating on Belgium’s European Championship last 16 clash against Hungary on Sunday.
