Rangers have confirmed that they have secured the signature of veteran goalkeeper Matt Gilks on a free transfer.

The 34-year-old Scot, who was released by Burnley this summer, has signed a two-year contract with the club and has become Mark Warburton’s seventh signing of the summer transfer window.

Rangers were looking for a replacement for Cammy Bell, who joined Dundee United recently, and Gilks is expected to provide competition to first choice goalkeeper Wes Foderingham next season.

Gilks will be joining the team immediately and will be travelling to the United States next week with the rest of his new team-mates for Rangers’ pre-season training camp.

The veteran goalkeeper will be hoping to play more at Ibrox after ending a frustrating two-year stint at Burnley where he made just two appearances in the League Cup.

The 34-year-old has also played in the Premier League with Blackpool and has represented Scotland, but the last of his three international caps came in 2013.

Gilks will work under a familiar face in the form of current Rangers goalkeeping coach Jim Stewart, who trained the veteran goalkeeper in the past on Scotland duty.
