Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers says that it took him very little time to realise the young full-back Kieran Tierney will become a top player for the club in the future.

A product of the Celtic academy, the 19-year-old became a starting line-up regular under Ronny Deila last season and caught the eye of team-mates and supporters alike.

The Bhoys moved quickly and signed him up on a new five-year deal on Friday, to secure the defender’s long term future at Parkhead.

And Rodgers admits that after a couple of days in training at the club he realised why there is so much talk around Celtic about the 19-year-old’d defender's talent.

With his experience of working with some top young talent during his time in England, the Celtic boss is confident that Tierney has the talent to become a star in the near future.

“I have seen in two days Kieran Tierney, who I will tell you now will be a top player”, Rodgers was quoted as saying by the Herald Scotland.

“He’s a 19 year old kid and probably before the start of last season no-one will have heard of him.

"But I’ll tell you know from my experience of working in England in the middle section and the top end of the league, this kid will be a top player.

“Absolutely 100 per cent he will be", Rodgers continued.

"Having worked with young players and lots of them, and seen them grow and develop, there’s no question about that. A good player is important.

“I think over time you have seen that they don’t always have to be a big name.”

Despite his tender years, the youngster clocked up 33 appearances for Celtic last season and is expected to have a major role in Rodgers’ side going forward.
