Schalke have officially confirmed the signing of Breel Embolo from Swiss giants Basel and are delighted to have seen off competition for his signature.

The young forward had been linked with Manchester United amid suggestions that Jose Mourinho had put super agent Jorge Mendes on the case, while RB Leipzig were also in the mix until pulling out.

However, it is Schalke who have won the race for Embolo and the 19-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Royal Blues, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2021.

And the Bundesliga outfit are delighted to have seen off substantial opposition for Embolo.

Sporting director Christian Heidel told his club's official site: "In Breel Embolo, we have been able to bring in a highly talented attacker, who already has a lot of international experience and was also in demand at several other top European clubs."
