Manchester City’s Argentine striker Sergio Aguero has claimed that there are several players who are thinking about retiring from the Argentina national side.

Argentina and Chile met in the Copa America final at the weekend and played out a game that was level at 0-0 at the end of extra-time. The Argentines lost 4-2 in the penalty shootout as Lionel Messi and Lazio’s Lucas Biglia missed their spot-kicks.

Messi, who has now announced retirement from international football, scored five times during the tournament that saw Colombia finish third and the USA finish fourth.

Aguero has admitted that the loss has prompted several players, along with Messi, to contemplate not continuing with the Albiceleste.

He was quoted as saying by the BBC: "There are several players who are evaluating not continuing with the national team.

"It is the worst defeat ever, worse than the two other finals.

“So the thinking is it might be time to make room for other players."

Argentina were looking to win their first major trophy since 2008, when they claimed Olympic Gold in Beijing.

They failed to win the World Cup in 2010 and in 2014, as their dreams were blown up in smoke by Germany on both occasions.
