Rangers midfielder Joey Barton believes Gary Neville must depart his role as England assistant coach following the Three Lions' exit to Iceland at Euro 2016 this evening.

England took the lead in Nice after just four minutes as Wayne Rooney converted from the penalty spot. But goals from Iceland in the sixth and 18th minutes were too much for Roy Hodgson's men to recover from.

The Three Lions were dire in the second half with sloppy passing and poor set pieces giving Iceland a comfortable victory and quarter-final tie against France.

Hodgson quickly resigned in the aftermath and Barton says Neville, along with Ray Lewington, needs to go too. He also insisted that the "Neville myth" has exploded, following Neville's poor spell as Valencia coach and subsequent sacking.

Barton wrote on Twitter: "But Lewington and Gary Neville have also got to be binned.

"Think the Neville myth has exploded anyway!"

Neville won 85 caps for England at international level between 1995 and 2007, while he took up his role on the coaching staff in 2012 following Hodgson's appointment.

Along with Euro 2016, Hodgson also led England into Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup.
