Rangers and former England midfielder Joey Barton has slammed the FA for favouring English coaches and feels Gary Neville has done little to become a potential successor to Roy Hodgson.

Hodgson resigned last night after England suffered a humiliating loss at the hands of Iceland to exit the European Championship in the last 16 stage of the competition.

Despite not being overly impressive in the group stage, England were overwhelming favourites to beat Iceland, but came up short to exit another big tournament in ignominy.

The search for the next England boss is set to commence in the next few days, and Barton indicated that the FA should look beyond English managers, as he feels they are just not good enough.

Barton told French sports daily L’Equipe: “The FA want to give our national team to an Englishman, but our coaches are not good enough.

“There are ex-players who have become coaches in very little time, but there is a difference between being a great player and a great coach.”

Former Manchester United defender Neville, who was on Hodgson’s backroom staff for England, has been mentioned as the potential successor to the 68-year-old but Barton slammed such a suggestion.

“Gary Neville is being mooted as a potential successor to Hodgson, but why? He was completely bogus at Valencia, why take him? It beats me.”

England will start their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign against Slovakia in September, and the FA are expected to have their man in place by that time.
