Had Tottenham Hotspur signed Chelsea bound Michy Batshuayi it would have had an impact on the wage structure at White Hart Lane, it has been claimed.

Spurs were very much in the mix for the Marseille striker, along with Crystal Palace, Juventus and West Ham.

But Chelsea launched a lightening raid, agreeing a €40m fee with Marseille for Batshuayi, who is now undergoing a medical ahead of signing a five-year contract with the Stamford Bridge side.

Had Tottenham won the race for Batshuayi, it would have had an impact on their wage structure and knock-on implications for contract renewal negotiations with existing players, according to the Times.

Spurs may well now turn their attention to other targets as they seek to bring in a striker to ease the goalscoring burden on Harry Kane.

Chelsea meanwhile have sent out a strong message over their determination to push back up into the Premier League's top four after a disastrous season which saw their hopes of defending the title go up in smoke.

Batshuayi is currently in action at Euro 2016 with Belgium, but has been given time off in order to undergo his medical with Chelsea.
