Leeds United striker Chris Wood admits that footballers do moan about pre-season, but believes that all the hard work finally pays off when the season starts.

Wood struggled with injuries in his first season at Leeds since joining the club from Leicester, but still ended up as the top goalscorer for the Whites with 13 goals during the 2015/16 campaign.

The striker was actively playing for New Zealand during the summer in the OFC Nations Cup, and was in action for his country as recently as 8th June against New Caledonia.

The 24-year-old is expected to be sharper at this stage of pre-season than the rest of his team-mates, but Wood admits that preparations for a new season are always tough on the body.

He added that footballers do moan about pre-season, but believes all the hard work finally helps them to reach peak fitness by the time the season starts in August.

The striker told LUTV: “The first three or four weeks of pre-season are tough.

“It is gruelling double sessions, it’s a lot of hard work, but it is all worth it at the end.

“We moan about it and get on with it, but at the end of the day, it’s all worth it come the day of the first game of the season.”

Leeds are currently scheduled to head to Dublin for pre-season friendlies against Shelbourne and Shamrock Rovers later this month, before taking on League One side Peterborough on 23rd July.
