Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld believes that his former Southampton team-mate Victor Wanyama has made the right decision by moving to White Hart Lane this summer.

The Lilywhites recently secured a deal for the Kenyan, signing him on five-year contract from fellow Premier League side Southampton.

The move will not only allow the 24-year-old to be reunited with his former Saints' team-mate Alderweireld, but will also allow him to play under his former manager Mauricio Pochettino yet again.

The Tottenham defender feels that it is the right move for Wanyama as it will allow him the chance to be part of an optimistic project. The north Londoners are on a roll at the moment, having ended last season in third and thus qualifying for the Champions League.

And with the club soon to sample their new stadium, the Belgian insists this is the right time to be part of the club.

Speaking about Wanyama, Alderweireld said via his club's site: “He’s a wonderful person. He looks very strong and he’s a big man but he’s a very nice person – he’s the opposite of how he is on the pitch.

"I sent him a message to congratulate him, actually. I think he’s making the right move – Spurs are on the up, we’re in a good place, the new stadium is coming and we’re in the Champions League.

"He’s a very exciting signing for us and he’s a very good player."

Alderweireld admits he spoke with Wanyama and explained he told the midfielder he was keen to work with him again.

“I just said ‘congratulations and welcome to the club’ and that I’m looking forward to seeing him.

"He congratulated me on the Hungary game as well and wished me luck for the Euros.

"It was just a short message, just a ‘welcome’ one. I know he will feel welcomed by the guys at the club and his quality will shine through on the pitch as well."
