Tottenham Hotspur have been rocked by injury news after Jan Vertonghen suffered a blow in Belgium training at Euro 2016.

Vertonghen suffered a blow to the ankle in training, initially thought to be just a sprained ankle, but is now something which has ended his participation at Euro 2016 for the Red Devils, leaving Belgium reeling.

According to Belgian broadcaster RTBF, Vertonghen is now on crutches and has hurt his ligaments, which means he is looking at being out of action for a period of four months; he has flown with the Belgium squad to Lille, but will have further scans.

If the time estimation is proven to be correct, Vertonghen would not be able to play for Tottenham until November this year.

The injury will be a big blow for Spurs, who have relied on the partnership formed in the centre of defence between Vertonghen and countryman Toby Alderweireld.

Vertonghen missed time for Spurs last season after hurting his knee ligaments, with Kevin Wimmer stepping into the team to replace the Belgian.

The defender's injury could force Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino to enter the transfer market, especially as the White Hart Lane outfit have Champions League football on the agenda in the new season.

Spurs will no doubt assess Vertonghen's injury as soon as possible to confirm the length of time he is likely to be absent for.
