Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that Henrikh Mkhitaryan is leaving the club this summer for English giants Manchester United.

The Red Devils have been in talks with the Bundesliga outfit to secure the Armenia international's signature and a breakthrough has been made, with Dortmund now announcing Mkhitaryan's switch to Old Trafford.

The German giants said in a statement: "The paths of midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Borussia Dortmund separate from this summer.

"BVB have complied, after intensive discussions, with the wishes of the Armenia national team member, to join the fifth placed side in the English league last season, Manchester United."

Mkhitaryan had been out of contract with Dortmund in 2017 and was refusing to extend his deal, meaning he could have walked away without a fee being due in just a year's time.

And the club's CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke explained that a superb offer from Manchester United meant that it was right for the midfielder to depart this summer, rather than next summer.

"This transfer was for us the basis of an entirely new starting situation. Manchester have made us an offer of tremendous value. Had we refused it, the player would have left in 2017 for free", he told the club's site.

"And we would have only postponed the personnel issue by a year."

Dortmund, who signed the midfielder from Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk, have not yet disclosed any details of the agreement with Manchester United.
