Sunderland are in advanced negotiations with Inter Milan for the signature of former Newcastle United defender Davide Santon, who has also been linked with a move to Crystal Palace.

Following his permanent return to Inter Milan last summer, the defender struggled to become a starter in Roberto Mancini’s team, and was only a bit part player at the San Siro last season.

The 25-year-old is said to be keen to leave the Nerazzurri for more first team football, and has been linked with a move back to England, with Crystal Palace reportedly interested in him.

While he is mooted to be on his way to England, Santon is claimed to be on his way back to the north east as according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, Sunderland have made progress in a bid to sign him this summer.

It has been claimed Sam Allardyce’s man are in advanced negotiations with Inter, and the Black Cats are now working hard to push the deal over the line.

The former Newcastle defender would be earning a salary of around €2m per season if he eventually moves to the Stadium of Light during the summer transfer window.

Santon clocked up 82 Premier League appearances for Newcastle during his stint on Tyneside, and Allardyce will be hoping that the experience pays off if the Italian eventually drops his anchor on Wearside.
