Andy Halliday believes Rangers fans won’t accept anything less than a title challenge next season from their team in the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers earned automatic promotion to the top tier by winning the Championship last season, and will be playing their first top division game in more than four years next month.

Mark Warburton has added eight new faces to the Rangers squad this summer, and while many feel it could take them a while to challenge Celtic for the title, Halliday thinks otherwise.

The Rangers midfielder feels that they have the players to mount a title charge next season, and feels the fans, who have been a part of their journey from the fourth division, wouldn’t just accept anything less from their team.

He admits that it is a big season for the club and their fans, and he is keen to make it a memorable one for them.

Halliday told the Herald Scotland: "People are looking forward to the new season.

“I know Rangers fans who really enjoyed going down through the divisions because they got to see Rangers in a lot of stadiums they were not used to seeing.

"But after four years they were all sick of it.

“They are glad to be back and it's a big year ahead. The fans won't accept us just competing next season – but we won't settle for that either. Our main aim is competing for the title.

“It will be difficult and Celtic are favourites but we have got enough quality to do it."

Rangers will be taking on Hamilton Academical in the first league game of their season at home next month.
