Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer has put pen-to-paper to a new five-year contract and will be with the club until the summer of 2021.

The Lilywhites secured the signature of the Austrian international from 1.FC Koln last summer, signing him on a deal worth £4.3m.

Wimmer didn't disappoint, going on to make his presence felt in the team with a total 21 appearances in all competitions.

It included a run of nine successive starts for Mauricio Pochettino's team in the league following an injury to Jan Vertonghen. He has also been capped four times by his national team and was part of the Austria squad at Euro 2016.

Speaking about his delight at having got the opportunity to sign a new contract, the youngster said that the chance to extend his stay at the club was something very important for him.

"I'm very delighted of course to sign the contract and stay with the club for five more years", Wimmer told his cub's official channel.

"It's a big pleasure for me and I'm very happy to stay with this club."

His manager also took time to express his views on the deal, highlighting the importance of the defender's first season at White Hart Lane.

"It's important that he's very young and his first season with us was good

All of the squad needs to be ready to take their opportunity and this is what he showed. He competed well and I think it was great for him."
