Rangers legend Ian Durrant has stressed the importance of his former side starting the Premiership campaign on a high note next month.

Following securing promotion to the top tier, Mark Warburton has wasted little time in trying to strengthen his squad, and has already signed nine new players during the summer transfer window.

Former Premier League stars such as Joey Barton, Clint Hill and Niko Kranjcar have joined the club and many feel there will be a couple more to follow before the window slams shut at the end of next month.

The flurry of new faces have given a sense of optimism ahead of Rangers’ return to the top table of Scottish football, and Durrant feels it is important the Glasgow giants start the Premiership campaign well.

The Rangers legend told STV: "They'll want to set down a marker right away.”

The Gers will be hosting Hamilton Academical on the first day of the season, and Durrant wants his former team to produce a performance they can then build on heading towards their game with Celtic.

"They've got a good opening tie against Hamilton, it'll be a hard game, but having your first game at home is something to build on and build up to the Old Firm game.

"It's imperative that they start well."
