Wout Weghorst has explained why he rejected interest from English Championship club Reading to move to AZ Alkmaar, where he hopes to follow in the footsteps of Vincent Janssen.

AZ moved to snap up Weghorst earlier this month with an eye on him replacing Janssen, who is now at Tottenham Hotspur following a hugely prolific season in the Eredivisie for the Alkmaar club.

But the striker, who landed from Heracles Almelo, could have headed to England where Reading boss Jaap Stam is a big fan – and the move would have seen him earn more money.

Weghorst has a plan though and it involves following in Janssen's footsteps by shining at AZ before seeking his fortune abroad.

The 23-year-old explained to Dutch magazine Voetbal International: "At this stage I chose not for the money. I want to make the most of my opportunities.

"Rather, I want to walk the same path as Vincent Janssen."

And Weghorst accepts that comparisons between himself and Janssen will be made.

"The comparisons between us are made quickly. I cannot stop this, but I am not adding to it myself."

Last season Weghorst scored 15 goals in all competitions for Heracles, as he helped the club secure a Europa League spot through the Eredivisie.
