Lyon have made a late play to secure the signature of Tottenham Hotspur forward Clinton Njie, but Marseille remain favourites to sign the Cameroonian.

Marseille have done a lot of leg work over the last few days to convince the 22-year-old to return to France after spending just one injury-marred season at White Hart Lane.

The Ligue 1 outfit have already struck an agreement with Tottenham, which would see Njie move to the Stade Velodrome on an initial loan deal, with the option of making the switch permanent for €7m after a handful number of games.

However, according to French sports daily L’Equipe, Lyon have initiated contact with Tottenham for their former player, and are keen to see him return to the Parc Olympique Lyonnais this summer.

Lyon sold the Cameroonian to Tottenham a year back, but are ready to provide competition to Marseille for his signature after the latter convinced Njie to return to France.
