Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez admits his side have lost a talented player in Georginio Wijnaldum, but is standing by the club's decision to sell him.

Wijnaldum has linked up with Liverpool in a deal which could cost the Reds up to £25m, while he has taken the number 5 shirt at Anfield.

The Dutch midfielder only joined Newcastle last summer from PSV Eindhoven, but the Magpies' relegation from the Premier League has spelt the end of his stint at St. James' Park.

Benitez rates Wijnaldum, but feels selling the 25-year-old was the right call.

"We have lost a very good player", Benitez told a press conference following his side's 4-0 friendly win against Belgian team Lokeren.

Wijnaldum is heading to link up with his new team-mates in the United States, with Liverpool on now on their pre-season tour.

Jurgen Klopp's men have friendlies against Chelsea, AC Milan and Roma lined up, before they return to England.

Benitez's side meanwhile have further friendly matches against Southend United and Vitesse before they kick off the new season with a trip to Fulham on 5th August.
