Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer is happy for manager Mauricio Pochettino to hand the squad a tough pre-season, which he believes will prepare them for a gruelling 2016/17 season.

The young defender put pen to paper to a new five-year contract at White Hart Lane earlier this week, extending his stay at the club until the summer of 2021.

And having pledged his loyalty to the team, the 23-year-old now hopes that he will be able to reward the faith shown in him by his manager by continuing to work hard for the team as they prepare for a tough season.

The 2016/17 season will in fact be more significant for the north Londoners as they will be back in the Champions League after missing out on the chance to play in Europe's biggest tournament for the last few seasons.

Not only will the Champions League be the only tournament to worry about, Wimmer thinks, but the performances in the Premier League will also matter as they hope to fight for silverware at the end of the season.

“We all know that this season will be even harder with the Champions League, we want to do well in the Premier League again and that’s why we need a good pre-season", Wimmer told his club's official website.

And Wimmer believes Pochettino putting the squad through a tough pre-season is very much needed.

He added: "It has to be tough in this period but at the end I think it will help us.

“It’s been a very tough week, we’ve trained a lot – your body, your muscles and everything hurts!

"Sometimes it’s not that much fun in pre-season, but you know you have to train and work hard so you are very fit during the season."

Tottenham will kick-off their new season with a Premier League fixture against Everton on 13th August.
