Leeds United have yet to offer midfielder Alex Mowatt a new contract, despite his current deal being set to come to an end in less than a year's time.

Mowatt signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract with Leeds in December 2013, but it is now rapidly dwindling down, placing the Yorkshire giants in a potentially difficult situation if they wish to keep hold of the academy product.

It had been thought Leeds would move to offer Mowatt a new deal, but despite his contract status, no offer has been put to the midfielder, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Leeds recently sold Lewis Cook to Bournemouth, losing someone who also had less than a year left on his contract at Elland Road.

Mowatt's talent has been talked up by successive head coaches at Leeds, but the club are increasingly running the risk of losing the player.

The 21-year-old has admitted he was not at his best last term after a storming 2014/15 campaign in a white shirt, and is looking to rediscover his form under new head coach Garry Monk.

Mowatt said recently: "Last season wasn’t a good season for me personally.

"I’ve got to try and put that behind me and try to get back to the form I was at in the season before.

"Everyone has a fresh start with the new manager and everyone wants to impress. I’ve come back as fit as possible and hopefully I’ll have a good pre-season."

However, the midfielder did note that last term he was played out of position.

"I played out wide a lot last season – if I’m asked to play there I’ll always try and do a job for the team – but when I’m in the number 10 role, I feel like a different player."
