Leeds United will announce the signing of a midfielder within the next 24 hours, but the new arrival will not be Sunderland's Liam Bridcutt, it has been claimed.

Bridcutt was on loan at Leeds for the majority of last season and the Whites were keen to take the defensive midfield shield back to Elland Road this summer.

But they have been unwilling to meet Sunderland's asking price for Bridcutt, while interest from another Championship side in the shape of Aston Villa has also muddied the waters.

Now Leeds have tied up the signing of a midfielder, but in a boost to Aston Villa, it is not Bridcutt.

Indeed, according to Radio Yorkshire, the Whites are set to announce the signing of a midfielder within the next 24 hours, with the deal having been done.

It remains to be seen who Leeds are drafting in, but there was speculation over the weekend that owner Massimo Cellino was looking at signing a midfielder from the Bundesliga.

Cellino also has extensive contacts in his native Italy and could have chosen to revisit the Italian market once again to add to the Leeds squad.
