Leeds United are still chasing Sunderland midfielder Liam Bridcutt, despite closing in on another midfielder they expect to sign within the next 24 hours.

Bridcutt spent the majority of last season on loan at Leeds in the Championship, but returned to parent club Sunderland in the summer following the expiry of his deal.

Leeds have been trying to re-sign Bridcutt, who has just a year left on his contract at the Stadium of Light, while Aston Villa are also keen.

The Whites' imminent signing of another midfielder could be thought set to close the door on Bridcutt ending up at Elland Road, but according to Radio Yorkshire, that is not the case and Leeds still want the Scotland international.

Bridcutt wants to move to Leeds, but the Whites are refusing to meet Sunderland's asking price.

It has been claimed that the fee the Black Cats want for the former Brighton man is £1.5m, more than Leeds are willing to pay.

Time is running out though if Leeds want to sign Bridcutt before the start of the new Championship season.

He has already missed the lion's share of Leeds' pre-season under new head coach Garry Monk and the Whites have only one friendly to play ahead of their opening day trip to QPR, with Atalanta providing the opposition this coming weekend.
