Manchester United linked defender Raphael Varane has confirmed that he will not be leaving Real Madrid this summer.

The 23-year-old defender has been linked with a move away from Real Madrid, with Manchester United believed to have made a bid for the player during the transfer window.

The Frenchman struggled to break into the Real Madrid first eleven last season for the big games, and he also missed the Champions League final due to an injury.

There was speculation that the defender was planning to leave the club this summer, but it emerged in recent days that after talks with the hierarchy he has decided to stay at the Bernabeu.

And the Frenchman himself confirmed that he has taken the decision to continue as a Real Madrid player despite rumours of his exit.

“I spoke with the club and Zizou [manager Zinedine Zidane, ed.]”, Varane said in a press conference.

“I am confident that I will continue to develop here, and my best is yet to come.

“In life we must take decisions, and this summer I decided to stay because this is what I want, and because I am happy here.”

A product of French club Lens, Varane joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2011, and has clocked up 150 appearances for the club.

He has a contract until 2020 with the European Champions.
