New Stoke City signing Joe Allen has revealed that he spoke to former Liverpool team-mate Glen Johnson before joining the Staffordshire based club.

26-year-old Allen, who was snapped up from Liverpool by Stoke yesterday for a £13m fee, has penned a five-year contract at Mark Hughes’ club.

The Welshman, who was included in the Euro 2016 Team of the Tournament, was a standout performer for Chris Coleman’s side as they made it to the semi-final of the tournament.

The midfielder has admitted that he spoke to Johnson, who left Anfield last year for Hughes’ side, before taking the final call to join Stoke City.

He told the official Stoke City website: "I did speak to Johno briefly and he had nothing but good things to say about the club.

"I have known him for a long time now so to hear such positive comments from him was good to hear and it definitely played a part.

"The general impression I got from him was that the club is very stable, and they want to push onwards to try and achieve even greater things.”

Stoke finished eighth in the Premier League last season and open their Premier League campaign on 13th August at Middlesbrough.

Allen, who made only 19 Premier League appearances for Liverpool last season, becomes Stoke’s second signing of the summer transfer window after the capture of Ramadan Sobhi.
