A potential deal for Liam Bridcutt to join Leeds United suffered a hold up due to Sam Allardyce exiting Sunderland to take over the England team.

Bridcutt is under contract with Sunderland for a further year, but is expected to be on the move after Allardyce declared him surplus to requirements last season.

Leeds have been in talks to sign the defensive midfielder from the Black Cats, though they have been unwilling to meet the Premier League club's asking price so far.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, a resolution to Bridcutt's future was held up slightly by Allardyce leaving Sunderland.

Allardyce recently put pen to paper on a two-year deal to take over as England boss, succeeding Roy Hodgson in the role.

He has been replaced at the Stadium of Light by former Manchester United manager David Moyes and it is unclear whether the Scot wishes to reassess Bridcutt before giving his approval to a sale.

Bridcutt spent the majority of last season on loan at Leeds and is a proven performer at Championship level.

He has also been linked with another Championship club in the shape of Aston Villa.
