Arsenal star Jack Wilshere has hailed the capture of Granit Xhaka, saying that he is a leader and is a good signing for the club.

24-year-old Wilshere, who made only three Premier League appearances for Arsenal last season, was part of the England side that were knocked out of Euro 2016 by Iceland in the knockout stages of the competition.

Arsenal have often been accused of lacking leaders and Wilshere is sure Xhaka can take a commanding role on the pitch. His view has also been reinforced due to playing against the Swiss star.

He told the official Arsenal website: "I've played against him a few times at youth level for England and also for the first team with England, so I know him quite well.

"I've always thought he was a good player, he's very strong and has got a good left foot.

“He's a leader, he can hold the midfield together and can get things going from back to front.

"He's a good signing."

Xhaka, 23, was signed for a £30m fee from Andre Schubert’s side, where he made 28 Bundesliga appearances last season, helping Gladbach finish fourth and secure their second consecutive Champions League campaign.

A former Basel player, Xhaka was part of the Switzerland side that were knocked out of Euro 2016 on penalties by Poland.
